From January 2012, the seventeen euro-area countries issued a joint euro commemorative coin for the third time, celebrating 10 years of euro cash. The coin features the euro sign at its centre, underscoring the existential importance of the euro for a united Europe. It was designed by Helmut Andexlinger, a celebrated coin designer at the Austrian Mint.

Official Design Vote

The finance ministers of the euro area launched the design competition for the joint issue — 10 Years of Euro Banknotes and Coins — in January 2011. A shortlist of five designs was drawn up from more than 800 submissions, and the finalists were put to a public internet vote. The winning design was announced in June 2011.

A total of 34,611 EU citizens took part in the vote, which remained in suspense until the very end.

Official final result: 1st place: 11,892 votes (34%)
