Portugal occupies the western edge of the European mainland on the Atlantic coast and was a leading maritime power during the Age of Exploration. After the Carnation Revolution of 1974, the country successfully transitioned to democracy; it joined the European Community in 1986. Portugal introduced the euro in 2002. Its capital is Lisbon.
