Country information

After decades under Danish, Swedish, German and Russian rule, Estonia regained its independence in 1991. Since then, the youngest euro member state has developed into the economically strongest of the three Baltic states. The landscape is characterised by an indented coastline, numerous inland lakes and rivers, and rich woodland. The Estonian capital Tallinn is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe; its old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
