With just 5.3 million inhabitants spread across an area almost as large as Germany, Finland is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe. The landscape is defined by vast forests, and the country is home to countless lakes, which cover roughly one tenth of its land area — earning Finland its nickname "Land of a Thousand Lakes". After centuries under Swedish and then Russian rule, the country gained independence in 1917.
