A Finnish landscape with a traditional Finnish log sauna at its centre. The year of issue "2018" appears at the bottom centre. The country abbreviation "FI" is shown at centre left and the mint mark at centre right.
In Finland, the sauna is not merely a bathroom but a cultural cornerstone: an estimated three million saunas exist for around 5.5 million inhabitants — more saunas than cars. Historically, the sauna was the first permanent structure Finnish settlers built; it served simultaneously as birthing room, washroom, sickroom and place of quiet. The traditional smoke sauna, savusauna in Finnish, in which smoke blackens the wood and only clears after hours of heating, is regarded as the oldest form and remains alive today in the landscape of central Finland. The löyly, the steam thrown onto hot stones, combines physical sensation with an almost meditative mood that is hardly translatable in the Finnish language. In 2020, UNESCO added Finnish sauna culture to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity — international recognition for something that has been a self-evident part of everyday life in Finland for centuries.
The connection between sauna and nature is central: the typical Finnish log-cabin sauna stands by a lake, nestled among birches and pines, with sweating alternating with a plunge into cold water. This image is not merely a tourist cliché but reflects actual practice — on weekends and in summer, the lakeside sauna is a fixed part of the Finnish rhythm of life. The practice connects generations and social classes, since rank and title traditionally play no role in the sauna. Finland honoured this cultural distinctiveness in 2018 with its own commemorative coin, showcasing sauna culture as a national heritage.
