The 2-euro coin catalogue established for the first time a comprehensive system for cataloguing and identifying all 2-euro circulation coins and commemorative coins, together with their officially packaged editions. Use this system to manage your collection in full. We explain the structure of the individual reference numbers below.
The reference numbers for all individual 2-euro coins are structured as follows:
Country code – Year abbreviation – Coin type – [Variant]
The country code follows the ISO 3166 standard also used by the European Central Bank (ECB):
- AT – Austria
- BE – Belgium
- CY – Cyprus
- DE – Germany
etc.
The year abbreviation is formed from the last two digits of the year of issue:
- 02 – Year 2002
- 03 – Year 2003
etc.
Coin types are distinguished as follows:
- 1 – Circulation coin
- 2 – Commemorative coin
Should a country issue more than one circulation or commemorative coin within a given calendar year, an additional variant suffix is appended to the number. This consists of a further sequential digit, assigned in order of the issue dates of the coins concerned:
- .1 – First issue of that type
- .2 – Second issue of that type
etc.
Below is an example of the cataloguing system:
The German 2-euro commemorative coin "50 Years of the Treaties of Rome" is assigned the following number:
DE-07 2.2.
