Country information

This Black Sea Balkan state offers not only stunning beaches but also impressive mountain ranges and numerous historical sites. Throughout Bulgaria's turbulent history, Greeks, Romans, Ottomans and Russians each held sway, leaving behind their respective cultural imprints. The First Bulgarian Empire emerged on the map around 680 AD. From 1393, the territory of present-day Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule for nearly 500 years, with full independence only achieved in 1878. Bulgaria regained full sovereignty in 1989, joined NATO in 2004 and has been a member of the European Union since 1 January 2007.
