The Republic of Ireland occupies the greater part of the island of the same name in north-western Europe. Since joining the European Economic Community in 1973, the country has transformed from an agricultural economy into a modern services and technology economy. Ireland introduced the euro in 1999/2002. Its capital is Dublin.
