2-euro coins 2018 – background & themes of the year
The 2018 vintage brings 36 2-euro commemorative coins 2018, making it one of the largest years in 2-euro history. There is no new circulation design, but the year is notable for a rare double feature from Germany – two separate German issues in a single year.
The most striking cross-border parallel of the year comes from the three Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania each release a joint Baltic design marking 100 years of independence, with Estonia adding a second, own coin for the centenary of the Republic of Estonia.
Germany appears twice in 2018: the Bundesländer series, running since 2006, honours Berlin this year, while a second commemorative coin marks the 100th birthday of former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.
Among the microstate issues, Monaco remains the scarcest mintage of the year with just 16,000 pieces for the 250th birthday of sculptor François-Joseph Bosio. San Marino strikes 63,100 coins each for Gian Lorenzo Bernini's 420th birthday and Jacopo Tintoretto's 500th birthday, while Andorra mints 75,000 pieces each for 25 years of its constitution and 70 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. More on these rarities is available under microstate coins.
Most of the 36 issues from 2018 remain worth only 2 euros in everyday circulation; the exceptions are again the low-mintage microstate coins. To identify a 2-euro coin 2018, the identify coin tool is the quickest way to check the edition.
