2-euro coins 2029 – background & themes of the year
2029 is already shaping up to be one of the most defining announced vintages: 25 issues are confirmed, all of them commemorative coins. At its centre sits a large joint European issue marking "25 years of EU enlargement," with 21 countries currently planned to take part – one of the broadest shared-theme issues since "35 years of the Erasmus Programme" in 2022.
The "25 years of EU enlargement" joint issue runs through almost the entire vintage: from Belgium, France, Italy and Spain to Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, and on to Greece, Ireland, Croatia, the Baltic states, Luxembourg, Malta, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Cyprus and Portugal, each participating country strikes its own national version of the same theme.
Germany takes part with three separate issues: its own version of "25 years of EU enlargement," the continuation of the "German Federal States" series with Baden-Württemberg, and a commemorative coin honouring former Bundestag president Annemarie Renger.
On the mintage side, no standout microstate rarities have emerged for 2029 so far – microstate data for the vintage isn't available yet. Among the figures already known, both Slovakia's two coins ("25 years of EU enlargement" and "80 years of the Slovak folk ensemble SL'UK," 1,000,000 pieces each) and the German coins (6,000,000 each) sit in the unremarkable range typical of large countries.
