25th Anniversary of the 2004 EU Enlargement.
Sixth joint issue of the European Union. All 21 eurozone states issued a coin with the same design on different dates. The coins differ only in the legend, which appears in the respective national language.
For Croatia, the EU enlargement of 1 May 2004 carries special significance: it marked the moment when eight Central and Eastern European countries, along with Malta and Cyprus, joined the Union — bringing the European integration process within tangible reach for Croatia, which at the time still stood outside. The ten new member states, including neighbouring countries such as Slovenia and Hungary, which like Croatia had previously belonged to the Yugoslav or socialist bloc, formed from that date a political framework that significantly influenced Croatia's own path to accession. Zagreb submitted its official EU membership application that same year, 2004 — driven not least by the momentum of this largest enlargement round in the history of the European Union.
Croatia itself did not join the EU until 2013, the most recent country to do so, and completed its path into the eurozone with the introduction of the euro on 1 January 2023. The 2004 accession thus generated momentum that reached far beyond the ten new members of the time: it demonstrated that the transformation of post-socialist societies into Western democracies and market economies could be achieved institutionally — an argument that repeatedly featured in Croatia's own accession negotiations. In 2029, Croatia marks the 25th anniversary of this enlargement round with a 2-euro commemorative coin, recalling a milestone that fundamentally reshaped the continent's political geography.
