Italy stretches far into the Mediterranean in its distinctive boot shape, and looks back on the legacy of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance. As a founding member of the European Economic Community (1957), it belongs to the EU's core nations. Italy introduced the euro in 1999 as a book currency and as cash in 2002. Its capital is Rome.
