Head of the David by Donatello (detail of the bronze statue in the Bargello National Museum, Florence). To the left, the Italian Republic abbreviation "RI" with the years "1466" and "2016" beneath in two lines. To the right, the initials "C.M." of designer Claudia Momoni; along the lower edge of the coin runs the inscription "DONATELLO".
Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, known as Donatello, is regarded as one of the most influential sculptors of the early Italian Renaissance and a pivotal figure in the development of European art history. Born around 1386 in Florence, he revolutionised the sculpture of his time by not merely imitating classical models but translating them into an independent, psychologically nuanced visual language. His bronze statue of David — likely created in the 1440s on commission from the Medici, now housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence — is considered the first life-size freestanding nude male figure since antiquity. With works such as the equestrian statue of Gattamelata in Padua or the pulpit relief in Florence Cathedral, Donatello set standards in composition, spatial depth and expressive power that resonate far beyond his own era.
For Italy, Donatello is more than a 15th-century art figure: he embodies Tuscan humanism and Florence as the very birthplace of the Renaissance. His works are closely bound to the cultural self-image of the city and the country; the Bargello, where the David has been publicly displayed since the 19th century, is one of the most important sculpture museums in the world. Donatello's influence reached as far as Michelangelo and Verrocchio, both of whom explicitly referenced him. On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of his death in 2016, Italy honoured this legacy with a commemorative coin depicting the head of the famous David, placing one of the world's most celebrated works of art at its centre.
