Croatia lies on the Adriatic coast and is renowned for its more than a thousand islands and its long coastline. Over the centuries, the territory passed through many hands — from Rome and the Hungarian-Croatian kingdom to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Since 2013, the country has been a member of the European Union and, on 1 January 2023, became the 20th state to adopt the euro. Its capital is Zagreb.
