2-euro coins 2020 – background & themes of the year
The 2020 vintage brings 35 2-euro commemorative coins 2020 to the market – no new circulation coins, but two German issues and a numismatic curiosity from Luxembourg: to mark the birth of Prince Charles, two different designs appear, one photographic and one in relief.
The most striking parallel of the year is the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death: both the Vatican and San Marino each dedicate a commemorative coin to the Renaissance painter.
Germany's Bundesländer series, which paused in 2019, resumes in 2020 with Brandenburg. A second German issue marks 50 years since the Warsaw Genuflection (Kniefall von Warschau).
Among the microstates, Monaco remains the scarcest mintage with 15,000 pieces for the 300th birthday of Prince Honoré III. San Marino strikes 54,000 coins each for the 250th anniversary of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's death and the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, while Andorra mints 60,000 pieces for 50 years of women's suffrage and 73,500 for the 27th Ibero-American Summit. More detail under microstate coins.
Most of the 35 issues from 2020 remain worth only 2 euros, with the exception of the low-mintage microstate coins. To identify a 2-euro coin 2020, the identify coin tool is the quickest way to check.
