A neuron with its synapses, representing the work of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. The commemorative inscription 'ΙΝΣΤΙΤΟΥΤΟ ΝΕΥΡΟΛΟΓΙΑΣ & ΓΕΝΕΤΙΚΗΣ ΚΥΠΡΟΥ' and the years '1990' and '2020' run along the inner edge of the coin; along the lower edge, the issuing state 'ΚΥΠΡΟΣ – CYPRUS'.
The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics was founded in 1990 in Nicosia and developed within a few decades into one of the island's most important medical research institutions. It emerged at a time when Cyprus was deliberately expanding its public health infrastructure while aiming for internationally competitive research standards. The institute combines clinical care and basic scientific research under one roof: it diagnoses and treats neurological and genetic disorders, conducts laboratory research at the molecular level, and cooperates with universities and research networks across Europe and beyond. Particular emphasis is placed on hereditary diseases that occur disproportionately often in the Cypriot population, including thalassaemia and certain neuromuscular disorders.
Over three decades, the institute has played a major role in raising awareness of genetic disorders in Cyprus and in establishing preventive screening programmes that today serve as a model for small island states with tightly interconnected populations. The combination of neurology and genetics under one institutional roof is no coincidence: many neurological diseases have a genetic basis that can only be fully understood through molecular diagnostic methods. The institute recognised this intersection early on as a strategic focus. On its 30th anniversary in 2020, Cyprus honoured this scientific and public-health achievement with a 2-euro commemorative coin.
