2-euro coins 2021 – background & themes of the year
The 2021 vintage counts 33 2-euro coins in total – all commemorative issues, with no regular circulation coin minted that year. Standout themes include Greece's 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, France's pre-series for the 2024 Paris Olympics featuring the "sprinting Marianne", and the Vatican's tribute to the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death. Anyone researching 2-euro coins 2021 will find a dense, thematically varied year.
Germany continues its Bundesländer series, which has featured a different federal state each year since 2006: 2021 is Saxony-Anhalt's turn. The coin extends Germany's largest joint series and remains a fixture for domestic collectors in every yearly set.
As usual, the microstates set the tone on mintage figures: Monaco's coin marking the 10th wedding anniversary of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène was struck in just 15,000 pieces, while San Marino's Caravaggio and Albrecht Dürer coins reached 54,000 and 56,500 respectively. Andorra ("Caring for our elderly", 70,000 pieces) and Malta ("Heroes of the pandemic", 72,500 pieces) also fall well below average, making them among the most sought-after 2-euro commemorative coins 2021.
For most of the 33 coins issued in 2021, market value still matches the 2-euro face value; they trade mainly as collectibles. The exceptions are the low-mintage microstate coins from Monaco, San Marino and Andorra. Anyone holding a 2021 2-euro coin can quickly identify it with the identify coin tool or check the rarest 2-euro coins overview to see whether it includes one of these scarce microstate issues.
