2-euro coins 2015 – background & themes of the year
With 49 issues – 47 commemorative coins and 2 regular circulation coins – the 2015 vintage ranks among the largest in the history of 2-euro coins. The defining theme of the year was a milestone EU anniversary: 30 years of the European flag.
As many as 19 eurozone countries released a joint commemorative coin marking 30 years of the European flag in 2015 – from Germany, France and Italy to the Baltic states and the microstates Andorra, San Marino, Malta and Cyprus. This broad participation makes the 2-euro coins 2015 one of the largest joint vintages ever.
Germany featured no fewer than three designs in 2015: alongside the joint 30-years-of-the-European-flag issue, a dedicated coin marked 25 years of German reunification, and Hesse followed as the next coin in the "German Bundesländer" series. The German 2-euro coin 2015 is therefore spread across three distinct designs.
The 2015 microstate issues include some of the lowest mintages in the entire collecting field: Monaco struck just 10,000 coins to mark 800 years since the first castle was built on the Rock of Monaco, Andorra limited two separate issues (EU customs union, coming of age at 18) to 85,000 each, and San Marino kept both of its coins – 25 years of German reunification and 750 years of Dante Alighieri – at 102,400 pieces each.
Despite the record number of issues, most 2-euro commemorative coins 2015 are still worth their 2-euro face value – the main exceptions being Monaco's low-mintage castle coin and the other microstate issues. Check the microstates page for an overview of especially scarce pieces, or use the coin identification tool to quickly identify any coin from this vintage.
