Luxembourg is one of Europe's last great duchies and, at the same time, the only remaining Grand Duchy in the world. This small country at the heart of the continent combines its long-standing monarchy with a central role in European integration - Luxembourg is a founding member of the EU and home to major European institutions. Grand Duke Henri ascended the throne in 2000, after his father, Grand Duke Jean, abdicated following a 36-year reign. Henri, born in 1955 in Betzdorf and educated at the University of Geneva as well as the British Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, thereby took charge of a country that had developed economically into one of the wealthiest in Europe.
During his reign, Grand Duke Henri has embodied a modern, approachable style of constitutional monarchy. He is engaged in humanitarian issues and represents Luxembourg on the international stage, including at the United Nations and within EU institutions. At his side stands Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, a Cuban-born diplomat who leads numerous social projects of her own. Together they have five children; their eldest son, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, married in 2012 in one of the largest state occasions in Luxembourg's recent history. To mark the 15th anniversary of his accession to the throne in 2015, Luxembourg honoured the ruling couple with a 2-euro commemorative coin.
