Greece, at the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, is regarded as the cradle of European civilisation and encompasses, in addition to the mainland, several thousand islands. The country joined the European Community in 1981 and introduced the euro in 2001. Greece is also home to the very first 2-euro commemorative coin ever issued (Athens 2004 Olympic Games). Its capital is Athens.
