Portrait of the celebrated Greek author Penelope Delta (1874–1941), facing right. Above, the commemorative inscription and issuing state "ΠHNEΛOΠHΣ ΔEΛTA 1874–1941 ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ". The palmette of the Greek mint appears to the left and the year 2024 to the right; the coin designer's initials "ΣTAM" are visible at lower right beside the portrait.
Penelope Delta is regarded as the founder of modern Greek children's literature and is one of the country's most widely read authors. Born in 1874 in Alexandria as the daughter of banker and later national politician Emmanuel Benakis, she grew up in a wealthy Greek merchant family closely woven into the cultural and political upheavals of her time. Her best-known novels — including "For the Fatherland" and "In the Time of the Bulgar-Slayer" — are set in historical periods of Greek history and combine accurate research with a narrative style deliberately aimed at children and young people. In doing so, Delta set a standard for historical storytelling in Greek that still resonates today.
Her life was marked by political upheaval: Greece's defeat in the Greco-Turkish War of 1922 and the subsequent population exchange affected her deeply, both personally and thematically. Delta was also publicly engaged — as a correspondent of leading intellectuals of her time and as a witness to two world wars. She died on 27 April 1941, the day German troops marched into Athens, under unexplained circumstances. Greece honored her in 2024 on the occasion of her 150th birthday with this issue.
