2-euro coins 2012 – background & themes of the year
The 2012 vintage marks a turning point in the history of 2-euro commemorative coins: with 30 issues – all commemorative, not a single regular circulation coin – it was the largest vintage to date. The occasion was a milestone anniversary: 10 years of euro cash.
The defining coin of the year was the joint commemorative issue "10 Years of Euro Cash", released with an identical design by 18 eurozone countries – from Germany and France to Italy and Spain, right down to the microstates San Marino and Malta. This broad joint issue makes the 2-euro coins 2012 one of the most popular vintages among collectors.
Germany appeared twice in 2012: alongside the joint 10-years-of-euro-cash issue, Bavaria followed as the next coin in the "German Bundesländer" series. Anyone searching for the German 2-euro coin 2012 will therefore find two distinct designs within a single vintage.
Low mintages are the norm among the 2012 microstate issues: the Vatican struck just 103,000 coins for the 7th World Meeting of Families in Milan, and Monaco issued 110,000 to mark 500 years since its founding and independence. Mintages stayed modest beyond the microstates too, such as Malta's coin marking the 1887 majority voting rights reform, limited to 355,000.
Despite the large number of issues in 2012, most of these 2-euro commemorative coins are still worth their 2-euro face value – the main exceptions being the low-mintage microstate issues.
