Further information

In northern Portugal, at the foothills of the Penha massif, Guimarães is regarded as the birthplace of the Portuguese nation. It was here, around 1109, that Afonso Henriques was born, the first King of Portugal, who secured the country's independence from León with the Treaty of Zamora in 1143. The medieval old town around the Paço dos Duques de Bragança and the castle where, according to tradition, Afonso Henriques grew up, remain remarkably well preserved to this day. Since 2001, the historic centre of Guimarães has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list, recognised as an example of a medieval town plan that has changed little over the centuries. The city centre, with its arcaded walkways, granite houses and squares, is not an open-air museum but lived everyday life.

As European Capital of Culture 2012 — together with Maribor in Slovenia — Guimarães moved into the international spotlight. The programme, under the motto "Time to Future", focused on connections between an industrial past, contemporary art and urban development; the region had once been a centre of Portugal's textile industry. Investments in cultural infrastructure, including the Vila Flor cultural centre and revitalisation projects in the old town, left a lasting mark. Portugal issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2012 to mark the city's honour, drawing on the historical symbols that inseparably link Guimarães with Portugal's founding story.
