Portraits of Grand Duke Henri, Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy, and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume. The inscriptions "PRËNZENHOCHZAÏT" and "LËTZEBUERG" and the year "2012", flanked by the mint mark and the mintmaster's initials, appear in the lower inner field.
This coin was produced using the new "Minted Photo Image" striking technique, giving the design a more lifelike quality.
Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, was born in 1981 as the eldest son of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, making him heir to the House of Nassau-Weilburg. He grew up in Luxembourg, completed his education, among other places, at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain, and took on official representational duties for the Grand Duchy from an early age. Stéphanie de Lannoy, born in 1984 in Belgium, comes from the old Flemish noble family of the Counts of Lannoy and worked in diplomacy and culture before her marriage. The two met within the social circles of European noble houses; their engagement was officially announced in April 2012.
The wedding took place on 20 October 2012 in Luxembourg City and, as the first event of its kind since the marriage of Grand Duke Henri in 1981, drew great public attention to the Grand Duchy. The ceremony included a civil marriage at the town hall and a religious ceremony at Notre-Dame Cathedral, attended by numerous European noble families and state guests. For Luxembourg, the event marked a dynastic milestone: with Stéphanie, a non-Luxembourger joined the grand-ducal house for the first time in a long while. To mark this wedding, Luxembourg issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2012, recording the grand-ducal house and the occasion in its official coin programme.
