Further information

On 28 April 1961, Grand Duchess Charlotte appointed her son Jean as Lieutenant-Représentant - an office that, under Luxembourg constitutional law, involves representing the head of state in official functions and was at the time conceived as preparation for succession to the throne. Jean thus gradually took on representative and state duties before Charlotte abdicated in his favour in 1964. This arrangement reflects a dynastic continuity characteristic of the House of Nassau-Weilburg: the transfer of state authority took place in an orderly, gradual manner, not through death or crisis.

Jean reigned over Luxembourg from 1964 to 2000 - 36 years during which the Grand Duchy completed its economic rise as a European financial and institutional centre. As a founding member state of the European Communities, Luxembourg was a firm anchor of European integration under Jean; the country hosted decisive EC summits and treaty negotiations on several occasions. Jean himself was regarded as a reserved, institutionally stabilising figure - less publicly prominent than some European monarchs, but a constant presence during a politically stable era. With the Luxembourg 2-euro commemorative coin of 2011, the Grand Duchy marked the 50th anniversary of that appointment, which marked the beginning of his active role as ruler.
