Grand Duke Henri in half-profile facing right, with the Grand Ducal coat of arms beside him; the year "2010", framed by mint marks and extending slightly into the outer ring, appears above the arms. The issuing state "LËTZEBUERG", struck at the bottom, overlaps slightly into the inner field.
In 2012 a retrospective set was issued comprising the Luxembourg €2 commemorative coins of 2009–2012 (LU-09 G1, LU-09 G2, LU-10 G1, LU-11 G1, LU-12 G1, LU-12 G2).
Luxembourg has been a sovereign Grand Duchy under the House of Nassau-Weilburg since 1890, and its head of state continues to hold the title of Grand Duke to this day. Henri, born in 1955, ascended the throne in October 2000 following the abdication of his father, Jean. As head of state, he fulfils above all representative and constitutional duties: he appoints the government, signs laws and represents the Grand Duchy abroad. Luxembourg's state coat of arms, a blue, white and red lion on a silver field, is among the oldest heraldic emblems in Western Europe and is closely tied to the dynastic history of the House of Luxembourg, which produced several Holy Roman Emperors in the Middle Ages.
Grand Duke Henri's personal coat of arms differs from the state coat of arms through heraldic additions that mark the rank and dynasty of its bearer. Such princely coats of arms have a long tradition in European heraldry, serving to distinguish state authority from the person of the ruler. With around 660,000 inhabitants, Luxembourg is one of the smallest, yet also one of the wealthiest, countries in the European Union and hosts several EU institutions. Since the introduction of the euro, Luxembourg's coinage has regularly drawn on images and symbols of the ruling house. On the occasion of Grand Duke Henri's tenth anniversary on the throne, Luxembourg issued this commemorative coin in 2010.
