2-euro coins 2008 – background & themes of the year
At 13 issues (10 commemorative, 3 circulation coins), the 2-euro coins 2008 vintage is noticeably smaller than the year before. There was no official joint European issue in 2008, but four countries independently picked the same theme: Belgium, Finland, Italy and Portugal each struck their own coin marking "60 Years of Human Rights."
Germany continued its "Bundesländer" series with Hamburg as the third state. Other national themes that year: France used its 2008 EU Council presidency as a coin motif, Luxembourg honoured Berg Castle, and Slovenia marked the 500th birthday of reformer Primož Trubar.
Among the 2-euro commemorative coins 2008 from the microstates, round anniversaries again dominated: the Vatican dedicated its issue to the Pauline Year (106,084 pieces), San Marino to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue (130,000 pieces).
