With 21 issues (20 commemorative, 1 circulation coin), the 2-euro coins 2007 vintage is one of the largest of the young 2-euro era. It's defined by the very first major joint European issue: "50 Years Treaty of Rome," struck with a shared design by 13 countries.
Germany appears twice this year: once with its own "Treaty of Rome" issue, and again with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the second state in the "Bundesländer" series after Schleswig-Holstein opened it the year before.
Alongside the joint issue, individual countries kept their own themes alive: Finland marked 90 years of independence, Luxembourg honoured the Grand Ducal Palace, Portugal used its 2007 EU Council presidency as a coin motif, and Monaco commemorated the 25th anniversary of the death of Princess Gracia Patricia.
Among the 2-euro commemorative coins 2007 from the microstates, Monaco holds the year's lowest mintage: the Gracia Patricia coin was struck in just 20,001 pieces, making it one of the most sought-after issues in the entire 2-euro programme. The Vatican (100,000, for Pope Benedict XVI's 80th birthday) and San Marino (130,000, for the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Garibaldi's birth) also stayed low. Even within the joint issue, mintages varied sharply: Slovenia's version came to only 400,000 pieces, Germany's to 1,000,000.
