2-euro coins 2009 – background & themes of the year

With 27 issues (25 commemorative, 2 circulation coins), the 2-euro coins 2009 vintage is the largest to date. It's defined by the biggest joint European issue so far: "10 Years of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)," in which 16 countries share a single design.

Germany appears twice in 2009: with its own EMU issue, and with Saarland, the fourth state in the ongoing "Bundesländer" series after Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Hamburg.

Beyond the EMU joint issue, Belgium and Italy independently picked up another round anniversary: the 200th birthday of Louis Braille. Other national themes that year: Finland celebrated 200 years of autonomy, Slovakia marked the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, Luxembourg observed the 90th anniversary of Grand Duchess Charlotte's accession, and Portugal honoured the 2nd Lusophone Games in Lisbon.

Among the 2-euro commemorative coins 2009 from the microstates, mintages stayed low once again: the Vatican struck its International Year of Astronomy design in 106,084 pieces, San Marino its European Year of Creativity and Innovation coin in 130,000 pieces. Even within the EMU joint issue some national versions are scarce: Malta's mintage came to only 700,000, Luxembourg's to 825,000.

Most 2-euro coins from 2009 are worth only their face value of 2 euros; the low-mintage microstate issues and a few scarcer national versions of the EMU coin are the exception. If you own a 2009 2-euro coin, check its mintage and rarity against our most valuable coins ranking – or continue on to the 2010 vintage.
