The current circulation coin features the profile of King Albert II of Belgium — the same portrait used on the coins issued from 1999 to 2007 — together with the royal monogram. The country code (BE) identifies the issuing state.
King Albert II reigned over Belgium from 1993 until his abdication in 2013 in favour of his son Philippe. His reign was marked by recurring tensions between Flanders and Wallonia and by protracted government formations, during which the king served as a unifying, non-partisan figure. The crowned monogram "A II" featured on Belgian coinage throughout his reign.
