Lusophony refers to the worldwide community of Portuguese-speaking countries - a legacy that emerged from Portugal's colonial expansion from the 15th century onward and today connects around 260 million people across four continents. The Jogos da Lusofonia, the Lusophony Games, were first held in Macau in 2006 and are a multi-sport tournament bringing together athletes from countries such as Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor. The Games are conceived as a sporting and cultural meeting forum within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), intended to make the shared linguistic and historical heritage visible beyond the competition itself.
The second edition of the Lusophony Games took place in 2009 in Lisbon - Portugal's capital and the symbolic starting point of Portuguese maritime history. Lisbon was thus not only the geographical but also the historical centre of a tournament whose participating states owe their shared language to Portuguese expansion. As host country, Portugal was responsible for organisation and infrastructure and, by staging the games in its capital, made a clear statement of commitment to the Lusophone community. On the occasion of these second Games, Portugal issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2009 marking the tournament and its significance for the Portuguese-speaking world.
