The 2016 vintage brings 32 new 2-euro commemorative coins to the market – no new circulation design was introduced this year, so anyone searching for 2-euro coins 2016 will find exclusively special editions with a historical, sporting or cultural theme from across Europe.
Sport and politics dominate 2016: France marks the UEFA European Football Championship held on home soil, alongside the 100th birthday of President François Mitterrand. Belgium and Portugal both commemorate the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Ireland issues a coin for the centenary of the Easter Rising, Austria celebrates 200 years of the Austrian National Bank, and Slovenia looks back on 25 years of independence.
Germany's Bundesländer series, which has featured a different federal state each year since 2006, turns to the Free State of Saxony (Sachsen) in 2016 – one of the most closely followed collecting series among German 2-euro coins.
As in most years, it is the microstate issues that create the real scarcity: Monaco strikes just 15,000 pieces for the 150th anniversary of Monte Carlo, the lowest mintage of the year. San Marino issues 82,800 and 87,800 coins respectively for the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death and the 550th anniversary of Donatello's death, while Andorra mints 85,000 pieces each for the 1866 reform and for 25 years of public broadcasting. A full overview of these and other rare issues is available under microstate coins.
Most of the 32 issues from 2016 remain worth exactly their 2-euro face value in everyday circulation. The exceptions are the low-mintage microstate coins from Monaco, San Marino and Andorra, which trade well above face value depending on condition. Anyone holding a 2-euro commemorative coin 2016 can quickly check which edition it is with the identify coin tool.
