The Latvian Brown — a breed whose role in Latvian folklore and daily life makes it a symbol of the country's dairy tradition. Below the design at left, the issue year "2016"; along the lower inner edge, the issuing state "LATVIJA".
Latvia has been one of Northern Europe's traditional dairy-farming regions for centuries. Even in pre-modern times, pasture farming and livestock breeding shaped rural life between the Daugava and the Baltic coast. The Latvian Brown, a robust cattle breed that has adapted over generations to the Baltic climate, symbolises this way of farming: undemanding, hardy and closely tied to rural everyday culture. In Latvian folklore, cattle appear as a symbol of fertility and rural prosperity — a meaning that extends far beyond mere livestock farming.
Today, dairy farming is one of Latvia's most important economic sectors and a key export pillar of the country within the European Union. Latvian dairy products, above all butter and cheese, hold a firm place on the European market. The sector employs a substantial share of the rural population and is closely interwoven with Latvia's self-image as an agricultural country. The fact that Latvia made its dairy industry the subject of a national commemorative coin in 2016 reflects the high cultural and economic standing this sector holds in the country's collective consciousness.
