2-euro coins 2014 – background & themes of the year
2014 brought 32 new 2-euro coins: 27 commemorative coins and 5 regular circulation coins. There was no joint issue for all eurozone states, but several countries marked historic 20th-century anniversaries instead – Belgium recalled 100 years since the start of World War I, France the 70th anniversary of D-Day, and Portugal 40 years since the Carnation Revolution.
Germany continued its "Bundesländer" series in 2014 with Lower Saxony. The German 2-euro coin 2014 therefore belongs to the regional series that has run since 2006.
Mintages for the 2014 microstate issues stayed low once again: San Marino struck only 100,000 coins for the 90th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini's death, the Vatican 103,000 for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Andorra 105,000 to mark 20 years since joining the Council of Europe. Belgium's coin marking 150 years of the Red Cross was also relatively scarce, at 287,500.
