Further information

On 9 November 1989, East Germany opened its borders — a decision that within hours set in motion the end of the Berlin Wall. The structure, which had divided Berlin and imprisoned millions of people since 1961, was overwhelmed that night by jubilant crowds. The fall of the Wall marked not only the end of German division but also accelerated the collapse of communist rule across Eastern Europe. The Brandenburg Gate, for decades a symbol of division, henceforth stood for reunification — and for the beginning of a new European order founded on freedom and self-determination.

The Vatican closely followed political developments in Eastern Europe: Pope John Paul II, himself Polish, had spent years morally bolstering the freedom movements behind the Iron Curtain. The Holy See regarded the end of Europe's division as a historic turning point, which it also publicly acknowledged. The fact that the Vatican issued its own commemorative coin in 2014 for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall reflects this claim to speak as a global voice on central events of contemporary history — even when the event took place geographically far from Rome.
