Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who has served as Pope Francis since 2013, is the first pope from Latin America and the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church. He chose his papal name in reference to Francis of Assisi as a statement of humility, concern for the poor and environmental awareness. His pontificate has been seen as reform-minded, particularly regarding church administration, marginalized groups and dialogue with other religions.
