Further information

Felipe VI ascended the Spanish throne as the best-educated monarch of the Bourbon dynasty: military academies in all three branches of the armed forces, a law degree from Madrid, and a master's degree in international relations from Georgetown University in Washington. Born in 1968 as the son of Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía, he grew up alongside Spain's still-young democracy and was introduced early to state institutions. His proclamation in June 2014 took place during a period of considerable domestic political tension — economic crisis, debates over Catalan autonomy, and growing distrust of the monarchy all shaped the context. From the outset, Felipe VI positioned himself as an institutionally bound, publicly accountable monarch, clearly distancing himself from the corruption scandals that had damaged the House of Bourbon's reputation.

The 2014 change of monarch was the first in Spain since 1975, when Juan Carlos I took the crown following the death of Francisco Franco and led the country into democracy — an achievement that earned him great international esteem. His abdication in favor of his son was voluntary, with the declared aim of giving the monarchy renewed support among the population. Spain's 2014 2-euro commemorative coin recalls this transition between two generations of rulers, symbolizing the continuity of the constitutional monarchy on the Iberian Peninsula.
