To mark the change of head of state, the national sides of the 1- and 2-euro circulation coins struck from 2015 were redesigned. The third circulation coin series features a left-facing portrait of the new head of state, His Majesty King Felipe VI. To his left, the issuing state 'ESPAÑA' curves upward in capital letters, with the year of issue; to his right, the mint mark.
Felipe VI ascended to the Spanish throne on 19 June 2014, after his father Juan Carlos I abdicated in his favour. As a constitutional monarch, his role is largely representative and unifying, while governance rests with the elected parliament. His accession came amid domestic political tensions, including the Catalan independence movement, during which Felipe VI repeatedly spoke out in favour of Spain's constitutional unity.
