The coin bears a portrait of King Philippe together with his royal monogram — an 'FP' beneath a crown. The denomination '2' and two stars alternate in the design, each appearing inverted in turn.
King Philippe ascended to the Belgian throne in July 2013 following the abdication of his father, Albert II. As head of state of a federal monarchy with strongly autonomous regions, he serves primarily as a unifying symbol for a population divided linguistically and culturally between Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. His monogram "FP" replaced his father's on Belgian coinage.
