A reinterpretation of Antonio Berti's 1973 sculpture "Pattuglia di Carabinieri nella tormenta"; to the right, the overlapping letters of the Italian Republic monogram "RI" and the year "2014"; to the left, the year "1814"; along the upper inner edge, the "R" mint mark of the Rome Mint; along the lower edge, the initials "LDS" (engraver Luciana De Simoni) and the inscription "CARABINIERI".
As a military police force with influence across the continent, the Carabinieri are one of Europe's best-known law enforcement bodies. They were founded on 13 July 1814 by King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia as the Corps de Carabiniers Réaux — originally an elite unit modelled on similar mounted police forces in post-Napoleonic Europe. Their name derives from the carbine, the standard weapon of the early unit. Within decades of their founding, the Carabinieri were responsible not only for internal security in the Kingdom of Sardinia but also took part as a combat force in Italy's wars of unification — a dual mandate that continues to define their status as the fourth branch of the Italian armed forces today.
In the modern Italian Republic, the Carabinieri occupy a unique institutional role: they serve simultaneously as military police, as civil law enforcement in cities and rural regions, and as a specialised investigative body in fields such as art protection, environmental crime and organised crime. The Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, founded in 1969, is regarded internationally as a model and works closely with Interpol and UNESCO. With over 100,000 members, the force maintains one of the densest police networks in Western Europe and is present in nearly every municipality in the country. Italy honoured the Carabinieri in 2014 with a commemorative coin marking the 200th anniversary of their founding.
