Further information

Giacomo Puccini is regarded as one of the most significant opera composers in history and decisively shaped the genre at the turn from the 19th to the 20th century. Born in 1858 in Lucca, Tuscany, he came from a long line of musicians and studied at the Milan Conservatory. With works such as La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly, he created a distinctive style between late Romantic harmony and verismo-influenced realism that still fills opera houses worldwide today. Puccini had a rare gift for combining dramatic tension with melodic intensity - his arias belong to the best-known repertoire of classical singing. He died on 29 November 1924 in Brussels, a few days after a laryngeal operation, without being able to complete his final opera, Turandot.

San Marino maintains a close cultural bond with Italy and has for decades honoured figures from Italian cultural and intellectual history in its coinage. As a sovereign small state entirely surrounded by Italy, belonging to the Romance cultural tradition is a central component of San Marino's national identity. Puccini, whose work is deeply rooted in the northern Italian musical tradition, exemplifies those artists whose influence extended far beyond national borders. On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini's death in 2014, San Marino honoured his legacy with its own commemorative coin.
