Portrait of King Willem-Alexander with the partially overlapping portrait of his predecessor Queen Beatrix in the background. Surrounding both portraits: the inscription "WILLEM-ALEXANDER KONING DER NEDERLANDEN (crown symbol) BEATRIX PRINSES DER NEDERLANDEN (mintmark)" and the year.
Willem-Alexander, born in 1967 as the eldest son of Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus, ascended to the Dutch throne on 30 April 2013 — the first King of the Netherlands in 123 years. Beatrix had reigned for 33 years by that point and was one of Europe's most respected monarchs. Her reign was marked by statesmanlike continuity, commitment to social causes, and a quiet but effective modernisation of the Dutch monarchy. The transfer of the throne took place without political disruption: Beatrix stepped down but remained part of the royal house as Princess of the Netherlands, embodying a generational continuity rarely achieved so smoothly in Europe.
Willem-Alexander set his own priorities early in his reign — above all in water management and climate policy, areas in which the Netherlands has traditionally taken a leading role. His engagement extends to international bodies of the United Nations. The double portrait that the Netherlands issued on a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2014 documents the moment of transition between two generations of the House of Orange-Nassau: a regent taking office, and a monarch stepping down with sovereign grace.
