The national side of Latvia's €2 circulation coin depicts a girl in traditional Latvian dress. On the left, the year of issue and the first part of the country name "LATVIJAS"; on the right, the second part "REPUBLIKA". The design draws on a silver five-lats coin of 1931 featuring a Latvian peasant girl as an emblem of the Baltic nation's independence. The allegory — known as "Milda" — was created by Rihards Zariņš; the model was an actual peasant girl named Zelma Brauere.
The design deliberately echoes Latvia's silver five-lats coin of 1931, which featured a female national allegory known as "Milda" in traditional folk dress — a symbol of the independence Latvia achieved in 1918. The historical figure was modeled on a real farmer's daughter, Zelma Brauere, and designed by graphic artist and medalist Rihards Zariņš. By reviving this image on the euro coin, Latvia connects to a defining chapter of its national history and symbolism.
