An ancient Doric column with an oak branch to its left. The inscription "GEORG HENRIK VON WRIGHT" arcs from left to right, and the year of issue "2016" is engraved at upper right. At upper left appear "FI" for the issuing country and the mint mark.
Georg Henrik von Wright ranks among the most important philosophers of the 20th century and is the best-known Finnish representative of analytic philosophy. Born in Helsinki in 1916, he studied in Finland and under Ludwig Wittgenstein in Cambridge, whose successor he became at the University of Cambridge in 1948 — an extraordinary appointment for a 32-year-old at the time. Von Wright played a key role in editing and disseminating Wittgenstein's literary estate, making a substantial contribution to opening up his late philosophy to research. His own work includes fundamental contributions to modal logic, action theory and deontic logic — a branch of logic that formalises normative concepts such as permission and obligation.
Beyond logic, von Wright increasingly turned in his later decades to questions of cultural criticism and social philosophy. In works such as "Myten om framsteget" (The Myth of Progress, 1993), he questioned modern notions of progress and critically examined the consequences of technological development — topics that made him known far beyond academic circles. He taught and conducted research at the University of Helsinki and at the Academy of Finland and received numerous international honours. Von Wright died in 2003 in Helsinki. His 100th birthday in 2016 gave Finland occasion to commemorate him with a coin.
