Left-facing profile portrait of Princess Grace. To the right of the inner field the country name "MONACO", followed by the mintmark, the year "2007" and the Chief Engraver's mark. The designer's name appears immediately to the right of the portrait.
Grace Kelly was born in Philadelphia in 1929 and was one of Hollywood's most celebrated actresses before marrying Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956 and becoming Princess Gracia Patricia of Monaco. With this marriage, her life changed fundamentally: she gave up her film career and took on representative and social duties within the principality. In Monaco, she was especially active in promoting culture and in humanitarian work, including as president of the principality's Red Cross. She remained an internationally admired figure who did much to shape Monaco's standing in the world.
On 14 September 1982, Princess Gracia Patricia died from injuries sustained in a car accident on the coastal road between Roc Agel and Monaco-Ville; she was 52 years old. Her death caused shock around the world and left a deep void in Monaco. The principality has continued to honour her memory ever since, and her name remains closely tied to the country's more recent history. To mark the 25th anniversary of her death, Monaco issued a commemorative coin in 2007 recalling her life and legacy.
