A portrait of Prince Rainier III (1923–2005), who ruled the principality from 1949 until 2005, graces the country's first circulation coin. The name "Monaco" identifies the issuing state.
Rainier III reigned over the Principality of Monaco from 1949 until his death in 2005, making him one of twentieth-century Europe's longest-serving monarchs. Under his rule, Monaco transformed from a financially struggling microstate into a prosperous centre for finance and tourism. He also gained international fame through his 1956 marriage to American film actress Grace Kelly.
