Prince Albert II (b. 1958), reigning prince since 2005, is depicted on the country's circulation coin. The name "Monaco" identifies the issuing state.
Albert II ascended to the throne of the Principality of Monaco in 2005 following the death of his father, Rainier III, continuing the House of Grimaldi's rule, which has governed the principality almost without interruption since the 13th century. He is the son of Rainier III and the American actress Grace Kelly. Albert II is notably active in international environmental and climate advocacy, having founded his own foundation dedicated to the cause in 2006.
