A dove of peace with an olive branch set against a world map. The issuing state "MONACO" curves along the upper rim; the inscription "1993 ADMISSION À L'ONU 2013" runs in a semicircle below.
Monaco did not join the United Nations until 1993 - late for a European state, but understandable for a principality that had relied on strict neutrality and discreet diplomacy for centuries. The principality on the Côte d'Azur, at barely two square kilometres one of the smallest countries in the world, had already secured its sovereign status vis-à-vis France by treaty in 1861, yet long remained distant from international organisations. UN membership marked a turning point: Monaco no longer saw itself merely as a tax-friendly microstate and gambling haven, but as a full member of the community of nations with its own voice in New York. For a country with no army and no significant natural resources, multilateral engagement also made strategic sense.
Thematically, joining the UN fit well with the foreign policy profile Monaco has consistently cultivated ever since: environmental diplomacy, ocean protection and humanitarian initiatives are areas in which the principality has an internationally visible presence - not least through the engagement of the princely family, closely tied to oceanography since Prince Albert I. In 2013, the accession marked its twentieth anniversary. Monaco used the occasion to issue a 2-euro commemorative coin, honouring this moment of diplomatic opening.
