Further information

The Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg City is one of the most significant Renaissance buildings in the Benelux region and, at the same time, the political heart of the Grand Duchy. Located in the centre of the old town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, the building originally served as a town hall in the 16th century and was extended several times over the centuries. Since the early 20th century it has been the official residence of the Grand Duke and thus the seat of the monarchy - it hosts state receptions, audiences and ceremonial occasions. The characteristic facade with its battlements and turrets shapes the cityscape of Luxembourg's old town and is known throughout Europe as a symbol of the small but constitutionally independent Grand Duchy.

Luxembourg is one of the founding states of the European Union and, as home to key EU institutions - including the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Auditors - holds a political significance far beyond its size. The Grand Duchy combines centuries of asserting itself between larger powers with a modern role as a European centre. Grand Duke Henri, who has reigned since 2000, represents the continuity of a constitutional monarchy in transition. On the occasion of the issue of Luxembourg 2-euro commemorative coins in 2007, the Grand Ducal Palace came to the fore as a national symbol - a motif representing both the seat of state and the country's identity.
