Coin description

The circulation coin depicts the Slovenian poet France Prešeren (1800–1849) in profile, along with the words 'Shivé naj vsi naródi' ('Long live all nations'), a line from his poem 'Zdravljica' that also forms part of the Slovenian national anthem. The state name Slovenija indicates the coin's country of issue.

More about the motif

France Prešeren is regarded as the leading poet of Slovenian Romanticism and the founder of the modern Slovenian literary language. His 1844 poem "Zdravljica" (A Toast) celebrates freedom and friendship among nations and was declared the national anthem in 1991, the year of Slovenian independence. Prešeren's work played a major role in shaping a distinct Slovenian national consciousness in the 19th century, and his death on 8 February is commemorated in Slovenia as a national cultural holiday, Prešeren Day.
